Abstract

On 11-14 September 2016, in Lisbon, Portugal, the Centre for Social Studies organizes the 3rd Edition of the Critical Economics Summer School on the recent evolution of Capitalism in Portugal.

It will discuss, from a political economy perspective, the recent evolution of capitalism in Portugal, focusing on the growing weight of finance in the Portuguese economy and society. The prolonged stagnation, financial crisis and ensuing austerity measures have deepened economic imbalances and social inequalities, making more pressing the scrutiny of the processes and agents that have promoted domestic financialisation. This summer school proposes to do just that, pointing to the paramount role of the European integration of the Portuguese economy.

The school will be organised around four main topics: Financialisation of Capitalism in Portugal Crisis and Austerity in Portugal Financialisation and Inequality Financialisation and the Recent History of Economic Thought in Portugal.

The working language will be Portuguese.
