Seminar | Cultural Mapping Conversations
As concepts, approaches, and practices of cultural mapping evolve internationally in different contexts, it is increasingly important to foster greater awareness, knowledge-sharing, and connections among artists, researchers, and other practitioners in this growing field.
The Cultural Mapping Conversations series emerged in 2021 as a collective effort to bring together and discuss various practices, approaches, and emerging questions in a variety of international contexts. It provides a platform for flexible, accessible, and interactive formats that provide opportunities for presentations of projects, discussions of approaches and perspectives, and dialogue.
Cultural mapping workshop organized by URBiNAT at the New European Bauhaus Festival in Brussels
In a first session in Portuguese, we are bringing together colleagues interested in sharing and learning more about cultural mapping, bringing together researchers/practitioners, experiences and networks linked to thematic line 5 “Urban Cultures, Sociabilities and Participation”, the CREATOUR Observatory, and the Horizon 2020 project URBiNAT.
This conversation aims to connect colleagues from different horizons with the desire and need to communicate and interact around cultural mapping. We hope, in this way, to create a forum involving a diversity of perspectives to enrich everyone's research and practice. A session in Portuguese is the starting point to expand to other horizons, realities, interests and languages.
For this purpose, a brief online questionnaire was released where interested colleagues informed us about what they would like to share and learn about this topic. This information guided the programming of the first Portuguese-speaking session that will take place online on March 16, from 2 pm to 5 pm (GMT):
What is cultural mapping?
Who does cultural mapping?
What are the different ways of approaching and developing cultural mapping
Sharing/presentations by colleagues that will set the tone for the other dialogue participants to also contribute their experiences:
- Thales do Amaral Santos - “Sociocultural and affective mapping with high school students” (Belo Horizonte/Brazil)
- Clarice Libânio - “This is the Favela!” (Belo Horizonte/ Brazil)
- Vitório Leite - “Logar do Falcão transformation: intergenerational verification and appropriation models” (Porto/Portugal)
- Conrado Checchi - “Popular cultural memory and spatial anthropology with potters in Alto Vale do Ribeira” (São Paulo/Brazil)
Organized within the "Cultural Mapping Conversations" series and as part of webinar series of Urban cultures, sociabilities and participation in 2023
