With this Summer School, it is intended that students are able to:
• Identify the dominant issues in the debate on the changing conditions that situate the different approaches to social intervention in the city;
• Identify the theoretical references and analytical understanding of dynamics of participation and exercise of citizenship in the city;
• Design appropriate methodological and analytical tools to identify the processes and outcomes of urban intervention (in particular, through strategic actors);
• Build an objective approach inherent in the scientific method of social science, able to identify its differentiation from the opinions of the actors involved in the city, which arise from moral, ethical and political confrontation with the social dynamics;
• Produce a reflective approach on the role of innovation and its manifestations in the production of local action; and
• Locate the methodologies of intervention and the different roles of social actors, discussing in particular the role and contribution of scientific research to the construction of a reflective approach to urban intervention and citizen participation.
This will be accomplished through establishing a profitable dialogue between representatives of the scientific international community and activists and local authorities within the metropolitan area of Lisbon.
