27-29 September 2011
– On 27 September, two Special Sessions will highlight and explore: (a) Public Gardens, Gardening, Agriculture: Towards More Sustainable Communities, and (b) Cultural Indicators and Well-being: Monitoring Small Cities. On 28-29 September, the International Symposium will provide an intimate venue for participants to share and discuss good cases, practice-based insights, and theoretical approaches on the topic of how innovative artistic animation of public spaces can contribute to building more sustainable cities, with a focus on public engagement and the role of artists.

– An experiential Workshop on Cultural Mapping, a visual and participatory method to develop and represent place-based knowledge that can also promote spatial literacy and place- rooted civic engagement. The focus of this workshop is ‘Exploring Connections Among Place, Creativity and Culture’.

– An experiential Theatre Workshop on ‘Animation of Public Spaces through Innovative Artistic Practices’ will involve professional theatre companies, community engagement professionals, and researchers. The focus is the exchange of practice-based knowledge and techniques to involve members of the public in creative and planning initiatives and projects related to the re-use and animation of the public realm in cities.


A student-focused experiential workshop is being organized separately in conjunction with this event. This workshop (26-30 September) will involve students from the Theatre Department of the Utrecht School of the Arts (6 students), from the Faculty of Humanities (Artistic Studies) of the University of Coimbra (6 students), and from the ESEC (Superior School of Education) in Coimbra (6 students) and their professors. This event is being co-organized by the Utrecht School of the Arts and O Teatrão (Coimbra). Researchers and audiences will reflect on the work, its methods, and impacts.
