Common perceptions of (i)legality: the case of reproductive health in Portugal

This research project addresses a topic which has been scarcely studied in Portugal. The lack of objective data on this issue has lead to a huge distance between official law and the social representations of law and justice in the field of reproductive health. Precisely because there are few sociological analyses of reproductive rights in general, it is necessary to identify and characterize actors, their conceptions and social conducts, and account for the factors that help explain the different conceptions of justice associated with practices of reproductive health in Portugal.
More specifically, our aim is to collect and analyze studies on this issue carried out in other countries; conduct a systematic research on Portuguese women's conceptions of reproductive health and their impacts on social representations of law and justice as well as on their social conduct; and, finally, elaborate proposals of social intervention based on the data obtained.
