Research objectives

The project “Formal access to local political spaces in the local context: immigrant voters and elected in Portuguese municipalities and parishes”, funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (Reference: IME/SDE/81870/2006), has for main aim to analyze the reasons by which immigrants decide, or not, to register as electors and run as part of the electoral list for local elections. This implies being aware of the high number of potential electors that are not registered voters, what are the constraints to immigrant participation in Portugal, as well as analyzing the differences between the three last local elections.

Concerted with the data produced by other studies on the Greater Lisbon Area, the intention comprises disposing of a sample representative of the territorial basis so as to allow us to comprehend the impact of the different local policies and social conditions, as well as the differences in the forms of participation among the various migrant origins entitled to political participation in the Portuguese local context. We seek to assess the role of immigrants and their interaction with political organizations, the degrees of mobilization, as well as differences between migrant groups in Portugal.
