Meeting
Studies on Science in Portugal: contemporary routes

April 27th and May 6th, 2009, 9:30

Organization: Centre for Social Studies and Institute for Social Sciences

Studies on sciences comprise, at the present time, a transdisciplinary and deeply internationalized research field that takes for object practices, institutions and objects associated to the social appropriation, production and movement of technology and scientific knowledge. In Portugal, studies on science have earned a significant development during the last decade, evident in the involvement of the new generations of social sciences researchers in themes and objects in the field of science and technology.

The meeting Studies on Science in Portugal: contemporary routes, aims to discuss the emergent agendas in this field of studies. The meeting will bring together a set of recent authors, challenging new generations of researchers to ponder, setting forth from their very own objects of study, on the contemporary routes regarding sociological and anthropological production as what pertains to science and technology. In a joint effort of the two associate laboratories in the field of social sciences in Portugal, ICS-UL and CES, this meeting also seeks to open way to cooperation lines between groups of Portuguese researchers working on science studies, in Portugal and abroad. The meeting will occur during two separate sessions, taking place in Lisbon on the 27th of April and in Coimbra on the 6th of May, 2009.

This meeting thus pursues three main objectives: (1) devising a debate forum on the present directions of research on social studies of science and technology in Portugal; (2) rendering visibility to new researchers of the field; (3) developing synergies between researchers dispersed in various institutions, mainly between ICS-UL and CES researchers.
