Seminar of the Migration Studies Research Group Ilda Fortes, CES May 21th, 2010, 16:00, CES Seminar Room, 2nd Floor, Coimbra  The issue of immigrants’ integration in Portuguese society has been widely discussed within different fields. The approach gains a new perspective with the recently published news, focused on social housing, usually referred to as “problematic neighborhoods”, mostly in Lisbon Metropolitan Area. Considering the role of the press on the formation of public opinion, the representation of these neighborhoods can influence society’s perception of these areas and their residents, which can lead to the increase of prejudice and prevent the socio-cultural integration of immigrants in Portuguese society. Thus, trying to understand how the Portuguese press has been approaching the theme of “problematic neighborhoods”, and its implications to immigrants’ integration, is essential. Within the theoretical frame of this work, issues related to migration movements, and corresponding representation on press, are presented. The selected case study is the representation of immigrants’ neighborhoods on the five main daily newspapers in Portugal, within the period of five years. |
