I Conference February 19th, 2010, CES-Lisboa/CIUL, Picoas Plaza, Rua do Viriato, num. 13 (Underground Station: Picoas) Organization: CES / University of Coimbra / Architecture and Urbanism Research Group Coordination: João Mascarenhas Mateus. CES Organizing committee: Simultaneous translation available The History of Construction constitutes a recently defined discipline which aims to analyse the development of the modus faciendi of an ancient human activity, through a transdisciplinary approach. Construction – Civil, Religious, Military, Traditional, Industrial, Public and Private - is no longer seen as an activity of contractors, architects and engineers, associated to the issues pertaining to the development of the usage of material and Technologies. Also studied become the cultural attitudes of the builders themselves, the social and economical organization necessary to the mobilization of labour force and the corporative and trade-unionist factors. Thus its scope extends onto the economic policies and the methods of work organization used in the implementation of urbanistic programmes and Public Works; to the elimination and adaptation of the traditional industries; to the creation of new industries and commercial activities, to the destruction and creation of symbols of identity, the genesis of migration phenomena, to the processes of integration and exclusion. This discipline has come to be established and developed mainly in the United Kingdom, Spain, and Germany and more recently in France. Since 1996, Spain hás already organized 6 national congresses dedicated to the History of Construction. France carried out in 2009, its first national congress. The 1st International Congress was organized in Madrid, in 2003, the 2nd in Cambridge in 2006 and the 3rd Congress took place in May, 2009, in Cottbus, Germany. The organization of this conference by CES allows the development of the research line “Traditional” knowledge and social change of the field “Sciences, Technologies and Humanities”. The guest lecturers are Portuguese scholars that have developed research in various aspects of the discipline. The variety of papers, in the extent of the objectives of the History of Construction, will allow the demonstration and exploration of some of the fundamental fields in which the History of Construction may develop in Portugal. The spectrum of aspects covered does not aim to be exhaustive but merely to constitute the pretext for a first discussion on the specific aspects of Construction in Portugal throughout History. We plan on publishing the conference’s proceedings (on-line) and in paper, with the objective of constituting a first instrument towards the future development of this discipline in our Country and towards the dissemination in the international context.
Undergraduate, Master and PhD students: 10 Euros Centre for Social Studies’ researchers and students: free of charge Certificates of attendance will be attributed at the end of the conference
