INTRO – Exhibition at the Coimbra Regional Prison

Photography Exhibition “INTRO – ESTABELECIMENTO PRISIONAL DE COIMBRA” by Pedro Medeiros and curated by Isabel Nogueira, which takes place within the Commemoration of the 120 Years of The Coimbra Regional Prison (1889 – 2009).
This project is supported and scientifically guided by the Coimbra Regional Prison [EPC], Ministry of Justice - Directorate General of Prison Services , is sponsored by the Centre for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra and the supported by the Communication Department of Duplo Network in art and design direction.
This photographic mission, carried out in the course of a year at the Coimbra Regional Prison, from October 2008 and October 2009, had as main aim to conduct an exhaustive survey on the diverse elements that constitute this space and identify the spirit of this place. The documentary, of authorial vision, aims to show the audience the several components of this institution: on one hand to dignify its heritage of manifest historical and architectural interest, and on the other hand a “opening of doors” and on the other hand na civil society awareness-making regarding the facilities of a prison, its organization discipline and its intra mode of operation.
This is a project that assumes a commitment of civic awareness and participation, appealing to an exercise of comprehension and immersion of the common citizen in the space of the Prison Community.
This initiative also counts on a book release , limited edition of 120 copies, numbered and signed by the author, bookbinding and finishing executed by the Binding Workshop of the Convicted of the Coimbra Regional Prison.
The publication includes texts from the Coimbra Regional Prison, by José António Bandeirinha, Architect and Pro-Rector for Culture of the University of Coimbra and Isabel Nogueira, the projects curator..
The exhibition is open until November 30th , 2009, at the Coimbra Regional Prison (entrance by Praceta João Paulo II) by reservation.
