Tainted by Inequality: Struggling sugar-cane slave labour in the state of São Paulo (1995 – 2009)

The research has for aim to work upon the reality of contemporary slave labour in Brazil, namely concerning sugar-cane crops in the State of São Paulo, and also to analyze the diverse forms of combating this phenomenon parting from the action of several Civil society and State organizations. It also pursues the assessment of the limits and potentialities of the current legislation concerning this issue, as well as the struggles existing in the field of human rights of the labourers in such a situation.

 
Biographic note

Antonio Alves de Almeida - doctoral student in History at PUC-SP, in doctoral traineeship at CES under Professor Pedro Hespanha’s co-supervision. Holds a Masters Degree in Social Sciences at PUC-SP and is researcher on agrarian issues in Brazil.
