Portuguese law protects citizens from discrimination based on disability. But have we really achieved equality on this ground, regardless of progressive laws? Thirty eight years after the Portuguese Revolution, we want to tackle the issue of accessibilities and inequality within the academia. With a strong self-reflexive stance, this seminar will gather activists, experts, local authorities, policy-makers, researchers and students. During this event our invited speakers will offer an overview of legal and social policy changes in the field of disability in recent decades, provide examples of non-discriminatory practices within and beyond the university environment, and discuss what could – and should – be implemented in order to successfully overcome disabling attitudes within the academia. Therefore, the seminar’s main aim is double-fold: on one hand, to share existing knowledge on the field of disability studies and policies; on the other hand, to foster new and unambiguous commitments within the academia in order to implement non-disablist practices in future events.
