Ricardo Melo


Ricardo Melo is a PhD in Tourism, Leisure and Culture - specialization in Leisure and Sport, by the University of Coimbra, Portugal, in 2014. He also obtained a Post-graduation in Cultural Animation and Mediation at the University of Oporto, Portugal, in 2008, and a Bachelor degree in Sports - Sports Animation, Recreation and Leisure, at the Polytechnic Institute of Santarém, Portugal, in 2004. He is adjunct professor at Coimbra Education School, Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra, and coordinator of the Master degree in Education and Leisure, teaching since 2007 several curricular units in Bachelors (Sociology of Sport and Leisure; Sociology of Leisure and Tourism) and Master degrees (Education, Leisure and Society), and supervising master thesis related with the Sociology of Sports, Leisure and Tourism. He is a Postdoctoral researcher at Centre for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra (CES-UC), integrating the Research Group on Cities, Cultures, and Architecture (CCArq), which research interests are related with sport tourism, nature sports and sustainable local development. He edited and coordinated several publications, namely a book on Sport Tourism with "Cambridge Scholars Publishing" (2017), a special issue about Sport Tourism in the "European Journal of Tourism Research" (2017), and more recently a special issue about nature sports with "Annals of Leisure Research" (2019 and 2020). He is the vice-president of the International Research Network in Sport Tourism (IRNIST) which purpose is to develop international and interdisciplinary collaboration to create strategies and methodologies, and to disseminate knowledge, in order to enhance local sustainable development through sport tourism. In the scope of IRNIST he was the general coordinator of the second international sport tourism conference in 2014 (STC'14) that was held in Coimbra Education School, and he is coordinating several international research projects, including one about the evaluation of the impacts (environmental, economic and sociocultural) of small scale sport tourism events (half marathons) on sustainable local development (a project involving 12 different countries). He has presented papers in several national and international conferences, and has been member of scientific committees for international conferences and scientific journals. He is author of several book chapters and papers in scientific journals generally about nature sports and sport tourism. He has been organizing and coordinating several events of different scopes and dimensions (e.g., international conferences; sport tourism events; sport tourism travels; sports competitions; adventure challenges; festivals; sport, leisure and tourism field weeks; training courses). He has also been collaborating with public and civilian institutions such as ICNF and IUNA in educational projects related with sport, leisure and tourism. Ricardo Melo is a nature and adventure addict, participating in several nature sport activities, more often in MTB, trekking, rock-climbing and bodyboarding.
