Mauro Costa Couceiro

Professor Mauro Costa Couceiro is currently a full-time postdoctoral researcher at the University of Coimbra (UC), Portugal. He obtained the Doctor in Architecture degree by the School of Architecture of the 'Universitat International de Catalunya' (UIC) of Barcelona in 2009. He got an 'Sobresaliente Cum Laude' grade and the honor of 'Doctor Europaeus', awarded for conducting his research in several European countries. In his research was focused in complex biological processes, aiming to develop algorithmic analogies for the architectural, urban, and industrial design domains. Previously, at the same University, he studied two masters, one on World History of Architecture, Urbanism and Industrial Design, and the other on Cybernetic and Sustainability Studies for Architectural, Urban and Industrial Design. He also holds an undergraduate degree in Architecture from 'Faculdade de Arquitetura de Lisboa - Universidade Técnica de Lisboa' (FA-UTL), Portugal. Mauro was invited in the role of Visiting Professor, Researcher, and consultant to several institutions worldwide. Among them, at the Hongik University of Seoul, 'L'École Nationale Supérieure D'Architecture de Paris - La Villette', 'Faculdade de Arquitetura e de Design da Universidade de São Paulo', 'Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura y Geodesia de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid', ELISAVA - 'Escola Superior de Disseny i Enginyeria de Barcelona', Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC), 'Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya' (UPC), School of Architecture - UIC, 'Universidad de Puerto Rico', FA-UTL, ISCTE - 'Instituto Universitário de Lisboa', 'Universidade Lusíada de Lisboa', Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra (Architecture and Computer Science departments), and 'Escola Superior Gallaecia'. Mauro's research concerns the use of Biological Analogies for Design Problem-Solving, with special emphasis on the impact of Mixed Reality (MR) technologies and Algorithmic Design on Education and Architectural Design. He also uses Biomimetic approaches for Architectural Mass Customization, searching for adaptive and sustainable solutions that can be materialized using Robotics. Therefore, his expertise fields are Architecture, Industrial Design, Biomimetics, Building Information Modeling (BIM) for Historical Heritage (HBIM), Algorithmic Design and Digital Fabrication (CAD/CAM). Mauro participated in several contests of Design, Architecture, and Urbanism, among which stands out a first and a third place in international architectural design contests, both for public and buildings and their urban design integration. He also worked for as a space manager architect, developing and coordinating office-building designs and industrial building rehabilitation. In addition, he regularly publishes and presents his works both in conferences and exhibitions, as well as associates or collaborates with several international institutions, including the Toolingroup (Spain-Brazil), eCAADe - Education for Computer Aided Architectural Design in Europe, EIN - International School of Bionics and Architecture, International Society for Architectural Innovation, 'Collegi d´Arquitectes de Catalunya', Bentley Systems - Smart Geometry Group - Generative Components Software, Forum Barcelona, Bioma, High-Tech partners, McNeel Europe (Rhinoceros 3D/Grasshopper and VisualARQ/BIM), and Digivisión.
