Carla Luís, postdoctoral researcher at CES, takes office as a member of CNE

Carla Luís, postdoctoral researcher at the Centre for Social Studies (CES) of the University of Coimbra, takes office tomorrow, February 18, for a new term as Member of the National Elections Commission (CNE), in a ceremony taking place at the Reception Room of the Presidency of the Assembly of the Republic, at 12h00.

Elected by the Assembly of the Republic, Carla Luís has been a Member of the CNE since 2009, and since 2011 the only woman in this collegiate body. She holds a PhD from CES/UC, with a thesis in the area of democracy and elections. She coordinates the VoteDHr - Elections, Democracy and Human Rights project in this institution, carrying out various initiatives in the electoral area, including the Electoral Observation course, Elections in Portugal, among others, in collaboration with several national and international entities.

She participated in the recent editions of the various annotated electoral laws, and has been working actively in the area, in several missions and institutions, in Portugal and abroad. She was a researcher at The Electoral Integrity Project (Univs. Sydney/Harvard) and worked with UNDP as an electoral legal advisor in Timor-Leste, among others. Master in Human Rights and Democratization (EIUC) and graduate in Law from the Faculty of Law of Universidade Nova de Lisboa (FDUNL).

The National Elections Commission, the basic organ of Portuguese democracy, exercises competence over all elections and referenda carried out in Portugal, ensuring equal treatment and opportunities, and promoting objective clarification in electoral matters.
