"Women and armed violence. War strategies against women in non war scenarios”
36 month project (01/09/2006-01/12/2009), funded by Fundação Ford
Research team NEP/OGiVA: Tatiana Moura, Sílvia Roque, Grazielle Costa
This project aims to challenge hermeuthical constructions of war and peace through the analysis of practices commonly perceived as “war strategies” an and its impacts on the lives of women. Taking stock from a previous study on women and girls in armed violence contexts in Rio de Janeiro, in which is concluded that violence perpetrated by armed groups and gender violence not only presupposes the resort to strategies similar to those used in conventional war settings, but also has repercussions that bare resemblance to those experienced in war scenarios. Hence, this comparative study aims to analyse the insecurities and violence continuums which women endure in three Latin American cities, characterised by high rates of armed violence and signifiant presence of armed groups: Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Medellín (Colombia), an San Salvador (El Salvador).

This project aims to contribute to the multidimensional characterisation of small arms dissemination in Portugal, as well as the identification of good practices and policy recommendations on armed violence prevention and reduction. Specifically, the project intends to map legal and illegal supply of firearms, to identify its users/bearers and their motivations (according to sex, age and social class), as well as to investigate the differentiated impacts of armed violence and analyse existing prevention and combat strategies, promoted by both the State and civil society.

During June and July, NEP/OGiVA participated in the international campaign "Disarm Domestic Violence!", run by the IANSA (International Action Network on Small Arms) Women's Network. This participation involved data collection on the Portuguese reality, namely through the conduction of interviews with specialists on public security, health, social services and NGO which work on victims' support, as well as the apllication of questionnaires on small arms and domestic violence perceptions in victims centres, in partnership with the Portuguese Association of Victim Support (APAV).
