Room 2, CES | Alta

The São Cristóvão Fair developed in Rio de Janeiro beginning in the 1940s, with the main driver being income generation for immigrants from states in the Northeast region of the country. It is possible to find in the Fair several strategies developed by the merchants, with points of proximity and distance from different types of economy, such as solidarity economy, popular economy and capitalist economy, demonstrating the difficulty of framing the initiatives in one or other classification. This seminar intends to discuss proximities and distances identified in some initiatives of the São Cristóvão Fair with aspects of popular economy and solidarity economy, which seem to be the most obvious types of economy among the enterprises.
